August Favourites

August has a particular quality of light, soft and dusty and already tilting towards autumn, and it shaped almost everything that crossed our desk this month. Here are the palettes, brands and mockups we kept returning to, and why each one felt right for the tail end of summer.

Favourite Brand

If any brand belongs to the end of summer, it is this one. F.Miller works in a palette of pale sage and charcoal-green that reads like the last of the garden before it turns, and everything about the identity is built on restraint. The typography is clean and unhurried. The language is plain in the best possible way, all "supportive essentials" and "routines, refined", with none of the noise most skincare brands rely on. What we admired most in August was how confidently it does very little. There is no hard sell, no urgency, no shouting. It trusts that the right customer will slow down long enough to notice, which is a quietly brave thing for a brand to assume. A useful reminder that considered design is often about what you choose to leave out.

Favourite Colour Combo

This was the palette we could not stop reaching for. Pebble and bone did the quiet work, warm and chalky and slightly sun-bleached. On their own they would have been lovely but a little sleepy. Aubergine changed that. Deep and cool with a faint plum warmth underneath, it brought in the first suggestion of autumn without abandoning the season we were still in. We used it across identity boards and web palettes all month, and it never once felt like a compromise between two seasons.

Favourite Submark

We found this one while tidying our archive, which is the sort of thing August invites. The studio slows a little, the inbox loosens its grip, and suddenly there is time to open folders you have not looked at in a year. Mandy & Med Spa was an unused concept, a submark that never made it to the final round, and seeing it again with fresh eyes was a small reminder of how much good work sits quietly in a portfolio waiting to be reconsidered. Some concepts are worth keeping simply because they teach you something about your own hand.

Favourite Mockup

Our own Le Cachet Envelope was the file we used most this month, and there is a reason it kept winning. It is unashamedly editorial, which turned out to be exactly what late-August work needed. As the light changes and brands begin thinking about autumn campaigns and end-of-year launches, a pale summery presentation stops carrying the same weight. This one gives a wordmark a sense of occasion before anyone has read a single word. If you have an identity that deserves a little drama, this is the scene to put it in.

Favourite Behind-the-scenes Moment

Most of our month went into this. Éditions by Blanche is the subscription we have been building towards for some time, a curated library of mockups and lifestyle imagery released weekly, and August was the month it stopped being a document and started being a real thing. We spent the weeks styling scenes and shaping the tiers so they make sense for how designers work. Building something for other designers keeps you honest. Every decision has to answer the question of whether it genuinely helps someone present their work better. We cannot wait to open the doors this autumn.
